Chrisis in de Baarsjes

27 January 2009 – District Mayor Arco Verburg (PvdA) of de Baarsjes has stepped down because of a controversy over the youth work provided by Youth for Christ (YfC), he has announced at his weblog.

According to het Parool, a crisis has erupted among coalition parties PvdA and VVD. The VVD was the only party that did not have a problem with a Christian organisation dominating the youth work.

According to het Parool, the coalition may be mended, but another option would be a new coalition of PvdA, GroenLinks and D66.

However, the two opposition parties may be hesitant to join for one year in the administration of a district that may case to exist after 2010. If the reorganisation of the districts will take place as planned, de Baarsjes will almost cease to exist as an independent district. Verburg himself is one of the members of a committee that recommended the district reorganisation.
