Controversial parties get over 20,000 votes

30 November 2008 - Over 20,000 people have voted for the Socialistische Waterschapsvereniging and Eigen Woning en Water, according to the preliminary results of the AGV District Water Board election. The election has been won by environmental and anglers' party Water Natuurlijk.

The leader of homeowners' party Eigen Woning en Water has been convicted of fraud in the 2004 election. He is also the founder of the Socialistische Waterschapsvereniging, which pretends to be a socialist party defending the interests of renters. Each party obtained two out of the 23 elected seats.

Water Natuurlijk obtained 5 seats. Marco Kraal (Water Natuurlijk), Hélène Swart-Van der Wal (Animal Party) and Nico de Dood (CDA) have been elected on preferential votes. Turnout was 18.2%.

A majority of the elected candidates are from Amsterdam (13) and 9 are women. The CDA participated with an all-male list of 13 candidates, none living in Amsterdam. Allochtonenweblog reported earlier this month that it had been unable to detect any ethnic minority candidate on any of the lists across the country.
