Car free day highly popular

20 June 2007 - The car free day on 23 September has broad support among the population. Sixty-one percent of Amsterdammers say that having a car free day is a good idea and another 21% say there should be more than just one such day per year.

On 23 September, the entire area within the A10 ring road will be car free, with the exception of Zeeburg, which found it a waste of money. Activities will be organised, including a street festival at the Overtoom, kart races, auditions for the Amsterdam Admirals cheerleaders and the Dam to Dam run.

Initially, the rich and car-friendly district ZuiderAmstel did not want to participate in the car free day. However, this decision was reversed after a poll commissioned by Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth) found that 75% of ZuiderAmstel residents support the car free day.

Milieudefensie says car free days should be organised every month. This would make a ‘significant contribution’ to improving air quality, according to the organisation.
