‘Aboutaleb: apologize to homeless’

3 October 2006 – Alderman Ahmed Aboutaleb should offer the homeless dinner because he has inadvertently made them look back. This is the opinion of Judith Sargentini, party leader of GroenLinks (Green Party).

Half September, Aboutaleb said that inspections had revealed that the large majority of homeless social assistance recipients commit fraud. The media reported that eighty percent of the homeless would commit fraud. Two weeks later, Aboutaleb announced that the data had accidentally been mixed up. In the majority of the cases, nothing wrong had been found.

Sadet Karabulut (SP) concluded that the alderman had been relying on ‘ghost data’.

Earlier that month, Willemijn Los of the Drugs Users Advocacy Organisation MDHG had argued at the opinion pages of the Parool that the homeless are often victims of bureaucratic regulations regarding social assistance.
