On 1 December last year, the Centrum District has cut away a bicycle parked at the Keiizersgracht because of a photo shoot for a magazine. After the Ombudsman intervened, the district concluded that the removal was not justified because warning signs had not been put up in time. The owner has therefore received 246.16 in damages to pay for the lock, travel expenses and the time he spent on it.
The Ombudsman thinks that citizens should have better legal protection in case bicycles are removed for, for example, an event. The district agrees and has asked the municipality to lay this down in the police by law. (via Fietsersbond / AmsterdamFM)
