‘Fast cycle route along Haarlemmerstraat’

The Amsterdam administration has been taken by surprise by the growing popularity of the bicycle, the member magazine of cyclist organisation Fietsersbond reports. Bicycle racks near the station are full and some cycling routes are congested during rush hour. Govert de With of the Fietsersbond expects the construction of the North/South metro line will create room above ground to construct more wide bicycle paths, like the one along the Geldersekade.

Chairwoman Jeanine van Pinxteren of the Centrum District wants a fast bicycle route along the often-congested Haarlemmerstraat. She also wants stricter enforcement of the requirement of bicycle parking space at public facilities. This went wrong with the De La Mar Theatre: initiator Joop van den Ende wanted no bicycle parking because this yields no profit and the city administration gave in, Van Pinxteren said.
