‘After Wall Street, Occupy Beursplein’

On Facebook, Indymedia and other websites, calls have been posted to occupy Beursplein (where Amsterdam’s stock exchange is located) on Saturday 15 October at noon. On that day, world-wide actions have been announced in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street movement, which wants to call banks to account and fight the unequal distribution of wealth.

It is unclear who is behind the announced Beursplein occupation. “Occupy Amsterdam has no leaders or representatives. This is an action on behalf of everybody”, the organisers state. In addition to the Amsterdam action, an occupation of the Binnenhof in The Hague has been announced on 15 October.

The New York action started on 17 September. The movement has spread to other cities and unions and other organisations are joining. The initiators have been inspired by the Arab Spring and propagate non-violent resistance.
