Over 7,000 people have signed a petition calling on the local government to implement a 10-point plan to improve bicycle safety. The petition will be presented to Alderman Hans Gerson next Thursday.

The petition was launched after a 12-year old boy was killed in an accident at the Marnixstraat in June. “We felt that this accident was the umpteenth in a row of accidents, including one last year at the Stadionweg. The response of the municipality or district is always that it is suddenly possible to take measures, even though neighbourhood residents have often been asking for measures for years,” initiator Veronique Swinkels explains.

The initiators want buses and lorries banned from streets without a separate bicycle lane and want a course on driving in cities made obligatory for drivers. Also, bicycle lanes should be broadened in order to deal with the grown amount of scooters.

Is there an English version of the petition available?...thank you. Z

road safety

Thank you for your question. I am sorry but the petition for a safer Amsterdam for our cycling children was not been translated into english.
the 10- points call for a central policy that will coordinate all measures to make Amsterdam safer and increases priority for the position of the bycicle. Also it calls for swift action against all black spots that are still very much present in Amsterdam, it calls for more education for pupils at all schools and all sorts of measures that increase safety for cyclist including 30km zones in eareas where bycicles and lorries have no seperated roadzones.
