‘Free bicycle for schoolkids’

10 October 2007 - Primary school pupils should be given a free bicycle. The SP will present a motion to that effect today. According to the party, half the pupils cannot participate in bicycle exams because they have no bicycle or do not know how to ride one.

Bicycles from AFAC, an organisation that collects abandoned bicycles, could be repaired as part of practical lessons, thus giving young people an opportunity to develop technical skills.

“This bicycle plan offers many advantages”, SP’s Meta Meijer said. “Children get help riding a bicycle, which is good for both the environment and their health. By doing the exam, they learn how to participate in traffic safely. Finally, young people can gain valuable experience repairing bicycles in practical lessons”.

UPDATE 11 October - Meijer has withdrawn her motion after Alderman Tjeerd Herrema promised to contact de AFAC to find out whether enough small bicycles are available. If this is not the case, Meijer will try to obtain the bicycles in another way. She says fellow council members responded enthousiastically to the plan.
