Thousands El Hema t-shirts sold

31 October 2007 - The El Hema exhibition - a parody of the popular Hema department stores - has been prolonged to 6 January. Almost 30,000 people have visited the exhibition so far. Next Saturday, initiator Mediamatic will announce the winner of the El Hema design competition.

At the Arabic-style department store at the Post CS building, thousands of El Hema t-shirts have been sold so far. Best-selling products include wine, chocolate sprinkles, El Hema old skool shirts and oven gloves, Mediamatic’s Michel Langendijk said. All El Hema products are still available at the exhibition.

In addition to the exhibition, Mediamatic has organised an El Hema design competition. Entries include a set of beech wood building blocks designed by Annechien van Litsenburg (photo). The ‘regular’ Hema initially opposed the El Hema exhibition, but is now represented on the jury of the design competition.

Mediamatic; I am El Hema

UPDATE 4 November - The winner of the design competition is a sticker to put on satellite dishes. Picture of the winning design and other entries here (in Dutch)
