Socialists win in Amsterdam as well

23 November 2006 – Reflecting the national election outcome, the Socialist Party (SP) and the right-wing populist Wilders won among Amsterdam voters in yesterday’s Parliamentary elections, even though the changes were less radical here. The Party for the Animals also did well and received 3.4% of the votes, according to preliminary results published by O+S.

Wilders won 4.4% of the Amsterdam vote, which is less than its competitor LPF did four years ago (5.8%). Wilders supporters live mainly in Amsterdam Noord, where the party won 9.3% of the vote.

Turnout was 74.3%, somewhat higher than four years ago. Apparently, problems with voting passes did not have a negative impact on turnout. Traditionally, turnout is highest in ZuiderAmstel. This time, turnout was highest in Centrum. However, the fact that Amsterdammers could choose which polling station to use has probably distorted turnout data.

The final election results will be published tomorrow morning.
