Green Party: to polling station by car

1 November 2006 – At the initiative of GroenLinks (Green Party), the Westerpark district must strive to introduce environmentally friendly car sharing. In order to promote the initiative, the party will bring handicaped people to the polling station in a shared car on 22 November.

Research has shown that the shared cars offered by companies such as Greenwheels and Connectcar are very popular in Westerpark. According to council member Rutger Groot Wassink (GroenLinks), ‘quite a lot’ of people say they do not need to buy a car anymore now that the car sharing option is available.

The providers of car sharing want to expand, which requires the district to assign more parking spaces to these companies. Groot Wassink: “That is ok with us, provided that environmentally friendly hybrid cars are used. Incidentally, these cars are larger than the cars that are now available for car sharing”.

The district council has passed a GroenLinks motion asking the district administration to strive for hybrid shared cars. The district must also discuss with other districts whether expansion of the initiative is possible.
