Mileage charge experiment

14 September 2006 – The municipality is considering a regional experiment in which cars will pay an increased mileage charge during peak hours, Alderman Tjeerd Herrema’s spokesperson said today. The experiment anticipates the national introduction of a mileage charge in 2012.

Spokesperson Stefan Rutte does not expect that the experiment will start in the very near future, although one can never be sure. The installation of a new government after the 22 November elections might speed up the process.

The measure should apply to the motorways around Amsterdam, which are plagued by traffic jams. The idea is being elaborated in collaboration with the national government, the province and municipalities in the region.

Amsterdam uses the term ‘congestion charge’, but has something different in mind than the successful congestion charge introduced by London’s Mayor Ken Livingstone. In the British capital, people who want to enter the city centre by car pay a daily charge of £8.

The London tollbooths led to less congestion, less pollution and fewer accidents. Some of the proceeds were used to improve public transport and facilities for cyclists.
