New director for war institute

25 July 2006 – Marjan Schwegman – left on the photo above from 1981 – will become the new director of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation (Niod). Presently, she is director of the Royal Dutch Rome Institute and named professor of women’s history at Utrecht University.

Schwegman’s interests include the differences in the way in which countries deal with war memories.

“I think it comes down to the fact that a country, a nation mainly exists through the shared feeling that it has experienced some sort of suffering. That creates a feeling of solidarity. Perhaps Srebrenica will some day become a second reference point in our history”, she says in the Parool today.

The Niod was originally founded to document the Dutch history of the Second World War, but the terrain it covers has been broadened since. For example, it conducted a study of Srebrenica, where thousands of Muslims had been deported despite the presence of Dutch UN troops.
